Herbal First Aid: Gentle Remedies for Everyday Aches & Accidents

Not all healing begins with a pill bottle.
For generations, women have turned to the plants around them—to soothe burns, stop bleeding, calm nerves, and ease pain. These weren’t alternative remedies. They were the first response, the family medicine, the quiet magic of knowing what grows nearby.
Herbal first aid is not about replacing emergency care—it’s about being in relationship with the plants and being prepared to respond with confidence and care when life gets a little scraped, stung, or swollen.
In this blog, I want to share a few of my favorite herbal allies for everyday first aid, from bumps and bruises to anxiety and indigestion.
Why Herbal First Aid?
Because healing can be immediate and sacred. Because herbs work with the body, not against it. Because keeping a small apothecary on hand can bring peace, power, and presence into our homes.
Core Herbal Allies for Your First Aid Kit
✧ Plantain (Plantago spp.)
Nature’s drawing salve. Great for bug bites, splinters, stings, and minor infections. Use fresh leaf, chewed or mashed, directly on the skin.
✧ Calendula (Calendula officinalis)
Anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, and a skin soother. Perfect for cuts, scrapes, burns, and diaper rash. Use as a salve, infused oil, or wash.
✧ Yarrow (Achillea millefolium)
Known as the “wound herb,” yarrow helps stop bleeding, reduce bruising, and prevent infection. Use dried yarrow powder or crushed fresh leaves on cuts.
✧ Lavender (Lavandula spp.)
Calming to both nerves and skin. Soothes burns, headaches, anxiety, and bug bites. Use as an essential oil (diluted), hydrosol, or cooled tea compress.
✧ Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla)
Not just for sleep. Chamomile calms stomachaches, teething pain, mild allergic reactions, and frayed emotions. Use as tea internally, or cooled for eye compresses and washes.
✧ Peppermint (Mentha piperita)
Cooling and pain-relieving. Good for fevers, headaches, muscle aches, and digestive upset. Use fresh, as tea, or dilute essential oil for topical application.
Internal & Emotional First Aid
✧ Skullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora)
Supports the nervous system in moments of trauma, panic, or overwhelm. Use as tincture for calming after shock or anxiety.
✧ Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis)
Soothes the heart and lifts the mood. Helpful for nervous tummies and children’s tension. Use as tea or glycerite.
✧ Ginger (Zingiber officinale)
Anti-nausea, anti-inflammatory, and circulation-stimulating. Excellent for motion sickness, cramps, or cold hands/feet. Use fresh or dried in tea, or add to a foot bath.
How to Build Your Herbal First Aid Kit
Here’s what I suggest for a starter apothecary:
Calendula salve or oil
Plantain + yarrow dried leaves (or pre-made poultice packs)
Chamomile tea bags
Lavender essential oil (diluted with carrier oil)
Peppermint tea or oil
Skullcap and lemon balm tinctures
A small jar of raw honey (antibacterial + soothing)
Store your kit in a basket or pouch near where you spend time—ready when life gives you a scraped knee, a nervous tummy, or a restless night.
A Sacred Approach
Herbal first aid is more than just applying salve or sipping tea. It’s about slowing down and asking: “What does this hurt need to heal?”
Sometimes it’s physical. Sometimes it’s emotional. And sometimes it’s a little of both.
With each leaf and root and flower, the Earth reminds us: You are held. You are capable. You already know how to heal.
